Kolkata Wets in Rain (Summer Relieve)
Kolkata: At 3.20 on Sunday afternoon, the sky went ominously dark. But, across the city, the mood lifted magically. As gusty winds swept up and twirled around dust, dry leaves and even garbage, the cheer spread. And, then came the rain. The long overdue Nor’wester was here at last.
Coming Rains…
The temperature immediately plunged by a cool 6.6 degrees to 29°. Gasping as they were under a prolonged spell of heat wave, men, women and kids stepped out of their homes for the season’s first rain dance. Met department officials had foreseen a Nor’wester coming in the small patches of clouds that could be spotted in the sky over the past couple of days. There were increased levels of moisture in the air and the maximum temperature was down from around 40-41 degrees to 35-36 degrees. The forecast of a thunder squall with wind speeds reaching 50-60 kmph anytime after Saturday evening held true.
The Met claimed this was not the season’s first Nor’wester. “The first occurred last month,” said an official. But that did not have the intensity to bring down the temperature. Sunday’s squall, however, had both the punch and the power to trigger a sharp drop in the degrees and cause some destruction. The city escaped with a few uprooted trees, but two persons died each in North and South 24-Parganas. Four grids of Eastern Railway at Ashoknagar, Titagarh, Sonarpur and Lakhikantapur were hit, stalling train services from Sealdah. In the Howrah section, too, there were some disruptions on the Basberia-Katwa line. Normal train services were restored by evening.
Hovering Cloud over Ambuja and Highland Park…
In the morning, another severe thunderstorm in Malda left eight people dead. While two persons were struck by lightning, another two were buried alive when their houses collapsed. The remaining deaths were mostly due to electrocution. The storm, which lashed the district around 10.30 am, caused severe damage to the mango crop.
